Crime Stoppers is based on the principle that "someone other than the criminal has information that would solve the crime." Crimestoppers was created to combat the two major problems faced by law enforcement in generating that information:
Crimestoppers resolves both of these problems by:
There are three essential elements:
The Community: Citizens are responsible for forming a Crime Stoppers non-profit corporation, whose Directors establish policy, determine amount and method of reward payments, work closely with the media and police, and oversee the program. The Directors are responsible for fund raising and all volunteer services. No tax money is sought.
The Police: A special Crime Stoppers phone with a well-publicized number is manned by detectives. The callers are given a special code number and do not give their names. If, after investigation the information leads to an arrest, the caller is entitled to a reward of up to US $1,000.
When you phone in your tip, you are given a code number by the officer answering the phone. Only you have that number. The officer will tell you when to call again to ascertain if your information qualified for a reward. If so, all you or your nominee has to do is visit our bank and see the person whose name the officer will give you. When you state your code number, you will receive an envelope with the reward in cash. No signature required. Easy money, eh! |
