The Scholastic Crime Stoppers Program

School

They don't lurk in the dark with magnifying glasses but despite their nonchalantappearances, they are some of the best private eyes in the business. Found walking down

school halls around the world, they are students and most don't even know their potential as sleuths.

For the past twelve years, the Scholastic Crime Stoppers Program has taken students and school administrators and transformed them into incredible investigators capable of changing their institutions into safer, more enjoyable places to live and learn.

Konawaena High School, located high on the slopes of Mauna Loa in Kealakekua, served as the only secondary school in West Hawaii for over 70 years. The school boundary extends over 90 miles from Puuanahulu to Honomalino. The school was accredited in 1996 by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges for a period of two years with a mid-term review. The school operates under School/Community-Based Management. Kealakehe High School, the second high school for the Kailua-Kona area, opened in 1997.

This was done with the full support of West Hawaii Crime Stoppers. Detective Larry Wieda, the founder of the school program, visited Kona and gave his blessing to the program. The school is now a member of Crime Stoppers International. West Hawaii Crime Stoppers has re-formed the Konawaena High School program as a division.
